Felting Retreat With Arrowmont Friends- Part 2 of 2

Some of our felt experiments.

Lattice scarves, infinity scarves made with pre-felt...

...centipede scarves, mittens and detritus totes.

I think that my vegetarian meals...

...were a bit of a surprise (at first) for my omnivore friends! :)

We experimented with lots of fun techniques and fabrics...

...open-weave linen and wildly patterned silk chiffon!

Kiki and Lorin's finished pre-felt and fabric totes...

                                                                 ...are really wonderful!

What a terrific week of felting and friendship!

(I can't wait for next year!!)

"Woven Lattice" Pre-Felt Infinity Scarf

Laying out mauve merino roving for a pre-felt.

Cutting strips of green and mauve pre-felt to size.

"Weaving" strips to form a lattice...

..."over-under, over-under"...like in Girl Scouts! :)

Wetting out the project...

...and gently felting it...

...and fulling it.

The finished scarf (here, as 'picket fence')...

...and opened up.

My middle daughter picked this color combination...

...when I was beginning a Christmas gift for a dear family friend.

Using strips of pre-felt and no stitching with nylon thread this time...

...I 'wove' a lattice, and carefully felted it into one continuous loop.

It's large enough that it can be twisted and pulled over the head a second time...

...or allowed to hang long and loose for a cowl.

Pencil Roving Scarf...(Failure)

I saw an adorable lattice/lace scarf on Sticky Paws' blog recently.
http://www.stickypawsfelting.co.uk/wordpress/?p=403

...and it looked like a good project to try with my new sander.

So I laid out various colors of roving in a wiggly pattern...

and felted it as usual.

What I obviously didn't do was put down enough fiber, close enough together to actually form a scarf.

To me, it looks pretty much like a messy, knotted pile of yarn.

Alas.

My twin daughters are thrilled, though.

They are taking turns wearing it around the house like they're Norma Desmond.

Lattice Scarf Part Deux

Full disclosure: I had help with this scarf.

My youngest daughters helped me to make some stylized 'posies' in different colors...all with yellow centers.

I first made the white lattice, then needle-felted the flowers in ways that they could be anchored in at least two spots.

It's pretty large, so it was a little awkward to do (I had to do half at a time on my foam needle-felting pad), but it really looks pretty.

...and it's a lot softer and less bulky than my previous attempt.

Lattice Scarf

I wanted to try a lattice scarf, but I was a little afraid.

...so, I needle-felted the three layers of fiber together prior to wet-felting it.

...but this made it a little thick and not as flexible as I'd like.

..but the colors are fun, and it will make a warm wrap on a cool night.
