My Midwestern Adventure- Part 1 of ?

Friendly and happy ducks.

Becky, preparing to start a raw fleece project.

Apple and raspberry 'Dutch Baby' (puffed oven pancake) for breakfast.

                                                An artist friend's wooded oasis.

How would you like to wake up to this view each morning?

The shelter for a pottery kiln and bread oven.

Shards of beautiful, but imperfect pottery...

...kept for future use in mosaic projects...

                                           ...like this spectacular oven exterior!

I loved the rows of mythical sea creatures, standing guard...

...and was so taken with the work of a particular pair of potters...

...that I managed to acquire a few of their pieces for myself!!

                                                    (Thanks, again, Denise!)

I recently spent a delightful week in Minnesota with my friend, Becky...

...and despite the fact that I somehow only managed to photograph her ducks...

...(too busy feeding apples to the sheep to go fetch my camera?)...

...she does, in fact, have quite a large menagerie...

...including sheep, chickens, 'meepherds' (inside joke)...

...and a few domesticated animals, as well.

During our time together, we felted several raw fleece projects...

                                      ...using wool from her 'babies'...

...and enjoyed delicious meals, prepared with uncommon flair.

We also spent time in the company of artist friends and neighbors, Denise and Paul Morris...
...who make functional pottery featuring whimsical and kinetic designs.

Next time: we 'take our show on the road'...

...and head west to South Dakota for a Fiber Fair!

'Pierced' Marine Tote- Part 3 of 3

Mid-way through felting...

                                          ...the painter's plastic is removed.

                                             After additional felting and fulling...

                                                ...the project is completed.

The finished piece, drying (yarn side)...

                                                      ...and 'piercings' side.

A close-up of the felted in stitching...

                                                 ...and of the pierced lattice.

                                                           The finished tote...

...in all of its 'under the sea' glory! :)

'Pierced' Marine Tote- Part 2 of 3

Adding pre-felt and yarn snippets to the tote bottom...

                               ...and topping them with a mash-up of pre-felt cut-outs.

After covering the sides and bottom with additional layers of roving...

                                                        ...felting is begun.

                                                      Mid-way through felting...

...the project is turned right-side out.

                                              Here's the partially felted bottom...

...and 'yarn side' of the tote.

Next time: the small bit of painter's plastic is removed...

                                                    ...and the tote is completed.

'Pierced' Marine Tote- Part 1 of 3

Stitching with wool yarn...

...on a piece of commercial pre-felt.

                                                    Preparing a tote resist...

                                                      ...with a taped-on 'flange'.

                                                      A close-up of the stitching.

Trimming the embellished pre-felt to the shape of the resist.

Adding layers of wool roving and wetting it out...

...then flipping the project to side two for more embellishment.

                                                               Wetting out side two...

...and adding a small piece of painter's plastic...

...in preparation for the next layer.

Next time: the tote bottom is embellished...

                                                        ...and felting is begun!

"Addition-Noil" Tote With Flowers- Part 2 of 2

                                                       Mid-way through felting...

...the project looks like it's starting to come together....

...but in the end, the layers on the fabric side didn't 'couple'.

...and required basting to hold them together.

As a permanent fix, I used variegated merino yarn...

...and hand-sewed the layers into place.

On the (successful) side of the finished tote...

                                              ...the short fiber merino flowers...

                                                     ...felted-in beautifully...

...while holding their glass centers securely in place.

A close-up of my hand-stitching.

                                                 The finished tote flower-side...

                                                          ...and fabric-side.

By layering an intact layer of (quite dense) fabric...

...between the layers of wool in this project...

...I didn't allow for any 'wooly connections', and thus ran into trouble.

Cutting slits in the silk layer of my 'noil and nepps' project...

...allowed wool to meet wool, and...'problem solved'!

Next time: a pre-felt and yarn project...

                                               ...with marine overtones!
