Wet Felted Kindle Cover

Mid-project; after the layout and some felting...

...making a slit in the still fragile felt in order to remove the resist.

The back side of the finished cover (flap open)...

...and flap closed.

A close-up of the leather closure.

The opening for inserting the Kindle...

...and the felt-covered button in close-up.

The holder 'in use'...(open)...

...and closed.

Two of us were gifted with Kindles at Christmas-time...

...and my daughter recently asked me to make a protective felt cover for hers.

Using the measurements from my own...

...I fashioned a resist out of foam floor underlayment.

I drew a rounded-off rectangle, 16 X 7 inches...

...and trimmed it into a gentle curve at one end.

Keep in mind that because I used a blend of merino and tencel roving this time...

...the resist may be slightly larger than you'd need if you make one from merino alone.

After it was felted to the desired size...

...I folded it over a few times to sort out where best to make the cut for the opening.

After cutting into the felt and sealing the edges with soapy fingers...

...I removed the resist and finished felting the piece...

...stretching it into a rectangular shape for drying.

For the closure, I stitched a thin strip of leather to the flap...

...and made a covered button from left-over felt and a metal button blank.

Riet--It's an e-reader...for reading books electronically.
Deborah--Thanks! I love using variegated roving, because the layout comes out so pretty with absolutely no effort on my part! :)

Now that's exactly what I need! My poor kindle is not as well protected as your daughter's now is. Now I'm going to need to go knit myself one!

I really like that. Such a practicle, and yet lovely piece of felt. I'm sure it will be much nicer carrying in in a nice warm felt carry case too. :)

It will be great protection for the kindle, useful and beautiful.

I've been absent from blogland recently- for longer than I thought! I'm so glad to be visiting you again, and seeing your amazing projects! This variegated roving is wonderful....and it still takes the eye of an artist to lay it out to achieve the effects you have! Love this bag! Just right! So shimmery and gorgeous!

Pumpkin--What a great idea. I'll bet there are knitting patterns already floating around out there, too!
Suzanne--I'm glad you like it!
Sandie--Just a little 'shock protector'!! :)
Rachel--I made one for myself with machine stitching on the flap that you may like :) That one will be coming up in the next week or so.
Fiona--Thanks! I agree...tencel blends are really lovely.

Dawn--You silly, silly girl!! :) To be honest, though, I'm not exactly 'down' with the technology. I wonder whether I didn't make my own cover (to be blogged about soon) in order to hide mine from view, since I feel guilty that I keep buying (and reading) 'real' books, while my new Kindle sits, neglected, on the shelf! :)
Angela--Thanks so much for the honor!

Ha! Ha! You have to watch me every minute, don't you? Always trying to slip something by you;-))) Did you know that I actually had an I-pad? Seems awfully fishy that I received it for an anniversary present from my hubby last year, and that he is in possession of it;-) Don't you find that funny? I may buy him a new pair of earrings that I've had my eye on for our anniversary this year! Oh, I'm just awful...Better have one more cup of coffee!
