Wet-felted Buttons

 
 
 

The first scarf was needle-felted onto some crinkly cotton gauze. I wasn't entirely happy with it at first...thought it needed 'something'. I had read about making jewelry or buttons with wet-felting. I took a long yarn-like piece of wool roving in one color, then wrapped it (using needle-felting) with one color after the other until it was about two inches in diameter.

Since this is a family-friendly blog, I cannot post the photos of the 'button roll' as it looked before it was wet-felted. Suffice it to say that it was a long, 2-inch wide pink thing that I enjoyed brandishing around the dining room (to the laughing horror of my teen-aged daughters!) before felting. After it dried, I Bobbitt-ized it into buttons and hand-sewed them to the front and back of the scarf.

For the second one, I tried a scarf with actual cut-outs in it for interest. I used crinkly cotton gauze, as before, and cut out holes of varying sizes. It was a little tricky to keep the wool going in the right direction while shaping it around the hole edges, but I think it worked. The 'wiggly' white things are some curly locks that I added for texture.
