"Stash Busting" Flat Felt Projects- Part 4 of 4

Laying out art batts plus my own hand-spun yarn.

The back (unadorned) side of the felt.

After fashioning the finished felt into a large caddy.

I love this little curlicue!

It's a wildly-colored, rustic carry-all...

...that would also be great for storing books or magazines...

...or even a set or two of bed linens on a closet shelf!

Close-up detail of some of the hand-spun yarn accents.

This project originated in my head with a question...

...'what could I make with a large, flat sheet of felt...

...if I made as few cuts as possible'?

So I made two parallel cuts into each long side of the rectangle...

...and folded one set of sides up and one set up and around.

I then machine-stitched the sides together...

...adding darts where needed, to help keep the sides from sagging.

Lastly, I fashioned a pieced handle...

...from scraps of felt that I had left over from Parts 1 through 3.

It's quite a large basket...

...measuring nearly 2 ft long by 1 ft wide.

I think it would be nice for storing things on a high closet shelf...

...so it would be soft if it landed on your head as you took it down...

...unlike my usual plastic crates!! Giggle.

Great idea! I like seeing felted projects that aren't wearable or art. Looks like your retreats gave you tons of inspiration.

All 4 parts are loely, functional, especially this one, very sturdy. Good to hold books, flowers, toys..... Colorful and cheerful home decoration. This one must have been done with quite some energy, right?

Andrea--Yup..."functional' Is my blog's middle name! :)
Terrie--Cheerful is a good word for it. It's quite wildly colorful, I think! I made it to give as a Christmas gift, so hopefully my friend will put it to good use!

I have a felted basket that I use to store one particular type of roving. This would be perfect for yarn or wool or about a million other things. I like that it's BIG!

Elizabeth--I hadn't even thought of using it to store roving or yarn...how perfect!! Great idea!
Rachel--I confess that I'm either a klutz or just moving too fast, since things are always falling on my head as I stash stuff on high shelves! :)
Riet--You're right! You ladies are just brimming with great ideas today...thanks!

This is supper, I love all the colors and the art yarn you used! Is it yarn you spun yourself? Brilliant job!

Martine--You're welcome! :) In case this helps, I did an e-reader cover last year for a Christmas gift. It's also pretty wild (but without the yarn): http://woollove-functional-fiberart.blogspot.com/2011/01/wet-felted-e-reader-bag-part-2.html
Melissa--Thanks! Yes...it's some of my drop-spindle art yarn, and it's as wild as the felt is!! :)

fabulous idea Heather, I may have to have a go!

Heather Woollove said...

Angela--You definitely should! Wouldn't it be pretty made from natural felt in different colors from some of your regional sheep??
