'Yarn Remnants' Hat- Part 2 of 2

Mid-way through felting...

...colored fibers are starting to come through the white wool.

                                                            The hat interior.

                                                   Blocking the hat for drying...

...using lots and lots of clips!

                                                           The finished hat...

                                                        ...has a rolled brim...

                                                  ...and an asymmetrical top.

                                                 The felted-in yarn remnants...

...now resemble birds, or Chinese dragons...

...and I think they look quite painterly

Color blending is on view here, as well...

...with the pleated top a pale orange shade...

...and the front, the darker wool color.

                                                     The interior of the hat.

(The turned up edge was hand hemmed after this photo was taken.)

                                                           The finished hat...

...along with two of its 'sisters'! :)

'Yarn Remnants' Hat- Part 1 of 2

A new resist shape is drafted from bubble wrap...

...and colorful yarn remnants from my stash...

                                                ...are applied to its surface.

A layer of white merino is laid out...

                                           ...to cover the yarn embellishments...

...and the project is flipped to side two...

...(where the whole process is repeated).

                                                         Back on side one...

...colorful wool roving is applied in stripes.

The hat is flipped over once more...

...and the wool 'rays' are wrapped around the resist to the front.

                                                 More bright roving is applied...

...and the project is wetted out.

                                                      Mid-way through felting...

                                                     ...the resist is removed...

                                                      ...and felting continues.

I've been thinking a lot about color blending lately...

...and this is one of my experiments.

                                                 Next time: the finished hat.

Cat "Welcome Mat"- Part 2 of 2

The back side of the completed project, drying...

                                                             ...and the front.

                                                    Using variegated thread...

                                                          ...in 'like' colors...

...I machine stitched a spiral into the felt...

...starting from the center and working my way out.

                                                The finished "Welcome Mat"! :)

Cat "Welcome Mat"- Part 1 of 2

Laying out variegated tencel and wool-blend roving...

...in a circular fashion...

...and covering one side of the project with an additional layer of roving.

Layers of wool from my stash...

                                                     ...(in random colors)...

...are applied to the 'non-design' side...

...until the mat is the proper thickness.

                                                  The project is wetted out...

                                                    ...and felting is begun.

My daughter's cat has a domed litter box...

...and I was asked to create a 'welcome mat"...

...(to help keep errant kitty litter pellets...

...from being tracked throughout her house).

                                                Next time: the finished mat.

Rolled Hem Bowler Hat- Part 2 of 2

The hat is turned right-side out...

...and the felting and fulling are completed.

The finished hat, drying on a hat form.

I gave my daughter the choice...

...between a colorful exterior with a somber brim...

...and a somber exterior with a vibrant brim.

She chose to 'hide her light under a...bowler". ')

The finished hat (blue silk accent side)...

...and red and yellow silk accent side.

                                           Next time: a cat's "Welcome Mat"! :)

Rolled Hem Bowler Hat- Part 1 of 2

Brightly colored sari silk fiber...

                                              ...is snipped into short lengths...

...and applied to the surface of the resist.

One layer of merino roving tops the silk...

...and then a second (in a perpendicular direction).

The project is flipped to side two...

...and the entire process is repeated.

                                                      Mid-way through felting...

                                                          ...the hat is cut open...

                                                    ...and the resist is removed.

                                                 Next time: the finished hat!
