A Plethora of Peculiar Projects- Part 10 (AKA Frankenstein Fleece)

More close-up photos of the finished rug...

...with its various staple lengths and mixed coloration.

The 'boingy bits' of a raw fleece rug are always my favorite parts...

...and this one had a lot of them! :)

It's a very thick and luxurious rug to walk on...

...and, oddly enough, quite the softest one I've ever made.

The finished rug...

...shown here with its 'suture material'...

...variegated green wool yarn! :)

A Plethora of Peculiar Projects- Part 9 (AKA Frankenstein Fleece)

Laying out raw fleece from a multiple-cross breed of sheep...

...and covering it with layers of wool roving.

Felting the rug...

...until it is fully felted...

...then feeling horrified to discover that somehow during my layout...

...the fleece 'tips' had not all been oriented 'out'!

To rectify this insanity, I then went a little insane, myself!

I pulled off bits of loose wool roving...

...ripped the rug into chunks...

...and 'Frankenstitched' the sections back together again...

...with green wool yarn!

After hand-stitching the rug back together again...

...I added a layer of cotton scrim to the backside of the rug...

...for structural support.

Some close-ups of the lovely finished texture...

...of this very strange rug...

I had a large raw fleece that had been languishing in storage...

...for nearly two years.

It was some sort of 'this crossed with that and a bit of this, too'...

...and it was very soft and pretty.

Unfortunately, as I was laying it out...

...I could not tell the 'tip ends' from the 'cut ends' on a large swath of this fleece!

(Whether it was because of the long storage time or the breed, I cannot say...

...but I've never experienced this kind of thing before!)

Next time: more close-up photos of the finished rug...

...now in pride-of-place in my living room...

..despite its dubious origins!! Grin.

A Plethora of Peculiar Projects- Part 8 of ? (Neuronal Tablet Cover)

The front of the finished iPad cover...

...and its slightly messy looking back side.

Happily, some of the back is hidden when the cover is closed. ;)

To me, the pattern of intertwining strands of bright colors...

...resembles a neural network...

...in a cartoon brain! :)

The closed tablet cover.

This is yet another unfinished project from this summer.

I originally intended to make some sort of loop closures on the cover back...

...into which the 'antennae' cords could slide (securing the flap).

Alternatively, a velcro, button or magnetic closure could be employed.

This project will be added to the group of other items...

...slated for my end-of-the-month giveaway.

A Plethora of Peculiar Projects- Part 7 of ? (Polka Dot Bag)

Crafting a resist with multiple parts...

...and covering each section with brown wool roving...

...and white pre-felt circles.

The fully felted purse on display...

...at our 'end of the week sharing party' in Portugal.

I made the white pre-felt with flax, tussah silk...

...milk protein and bamboo inclusions.

Side one of the finished bag...

...and side two.

This is another of my 'not quite finished' projects...

...that I intend for my end-of-the-month giveaway.

I think it would greatly benefit from a bit of hand-stitching at the mouth of the bag...

...and the insertion of a length of cording or tubing in each handle...

...for structural support.

A Plethora of Peculiar Projects- Part 6 of ? (Eco-Dyed Helmet)

Felting white wool roving with tussah silk, bamboo and milk protein fibers...

...over an egg-shaped resist...

...then trimming out a small section...

...in order to create ear-flaps

I altered this 'oh-so-plain' white hat in Portugal...

...with the ever-helpful ministrations...

...of my dear friend and natural dyeing guru...

...Terriea!

We tied both fresh and iron-water mordanted eucalyptus leaves...

...inside the inside-out hat...

...then heated it in a vinegar and eucalyptus dye bath...

...in order to achieve this lovely result!

This was an experimental hat...

...as I endeavored to find a new way to use an asymmetrical beret resist...

...and it was a lot of fun to make and dye!

To my eye, however, it has several 'design flaws'...

...and I believe that it would greatly benefit from a little judicious trimming.

Stay tuned for my end-of-the-month giveaway...

...if you have 'designs' on it! Giggle.

A Plethora of Peculiar Projects- Part 5 of ? (Cameo Slippers and Multiple-Resist Bag)

Adding additional fiber to each slipper...

...with a final layer of Hog Island wool...

...for extra soft sponginess!

Unfortunately, as I was laying out the last layers...

...I got distracted (or a little 'cocky'?)...

...and neglected to mark the cutting side on each slipper...

...and this was the end result! Waaaaah!

I did like the embossed-looking result, though...

...so I'll try to pay a bit more attention if I try it again! :)

****************************************************************
This is a multiple-resist purse that I started in Portugal.

It was to have three of these flap-like purse sections...

...but the center one sagged...

...and I couldn't figure out a work-around.

My solution?

I removed the center 'flap' and stitched up the gap...

...then promptly lost interest in ever finishing it...

...so here it languishes! :)

At the end of October...

...after the hustle and bustle of my eldest daughter's wedding has subsided...

...I'll be featuring a giveaway of several of my unfinished projects.

This grey bag will be among them...

...so if you'd like to finish it off for your own use...

...stay tuned!! :)
