"Big Sister" Crown and Unorthodox Baby Blanket- Part 2 of 2

Shimmery Blue Faced Leicester/Tussah Silk roving...

...and a cloud of silk caps.

Laying out a thin layer of roving...

                                                   ...and an additional layer...

                                                 ...perpendicular to the first.

Adding a layer of stretched silk caps...

                                               ...and wetting the blanket out.

                                               The finished project, drying...

                                                    ...and, again, once dry.

                                                   The back of the blanket.

Silk caps add a cobwebby, silver sheen...

...and the finished project is very soft and warm.

I've long been enamored of this luscious, heathered grey, knitted baby blanket...

...so for a 'welcome baby' gift for a good friend's newest daughter, Eliza...

...I decided to use some lustrous, dark brown and silver grey BFL/Silk roving...

...(a gift from my friend, Angela)...

...to make a rather non-traditional baby blanket!

Made with only two thin layers of roving...

...plus a cobwebby layer of silk caps...

...the blanket is especially thin and flexible...

                                                  ...and baby soft. :)

"40th Birthday" Table Runner- Part 1 of 2

                                                  Placing pieces of hand-dyed silk...

                                                ...on the bubble-wrap surface...

...and covering them with a layer of wool roving...

...followed by a perpendicular layer of silk and merino roving.

                                                     Wetting the project out...

...and folding the edges in for neatness.

Flipping the piece back to side one...

...and adding circles of dyed tussah silk as embellishment.

A friend of mine is celebrating a rather 'significant' birthday today...

...and even though age 40 is just the beginning of things for many of us...

...she doesn't realize this just yet.

To soothe the ache of this large, round number...

...I created a table runner for her in her favorite colors.

And as far as the "certainty, and creative freedom that comes with aging" goes?!?...

...she'll figure all of that out for herself soon enough. :)

                                               Next time: the finished project.

'Neutrals' Nuno Scarf- Part 2 of 2

Rubbing the scarf to complete the fusion of wool to silk...

...and to transform the scissor snips into holes.

Cutting even slits into the partially felted project...

                                                 ...to make a fringed edge.

                                                        Fulling the scarf.

The finished scarf with one 'fringed' and one 'Swiss cheese' end.

No shawl pin is needed for a secure closure.

The striped backside is just the 'tips overlap' from my wool layout! :)

My daughter, Hannah, modeling the scarf.

                                                       The pierced fin...

                                                   ...and the completed scarf.

'Neutrals' Nuno Scarf- Part 1 of 2

                                                 Assembling the 'components'...

...tussah silk, variegated wool roving, dyed Mawata silk hankies...

...and a length of silk fabric.

Laying a thin layer of wool over the fabric surface.

                                                        Adding silk hankies...

                                                ...to the wetted out wool...

...plus 'cirrus clouds' of tussah silk.

                                              Wetting out the entire project...

                                                        ...prior to rolling.

After rolling for a (considerable) time...

...slits are cut into a portion of the scarf.

Next time: one fringed end is created...

                                               ...and the scarf is completed.

A Plethora of Peculiar Projects- Part 7 of ? (Polka Dot Bag)

Crafting a resist with multiple parts...

...and covering each section with brown wool roving...

...and white pre-felt circles.

The fully felted purse on display...

...at our 'end of the week sharing party' in Portugal.

I made the white pre-felt with flax, tussah silk...

...milk protein and bamboo inclusions.

Side one of the finished bag...

...and side two.

This is another of my 'not quite finished' projects...

...that I intend for my end-of-the-month giveaway.

I think it would greatly benefit from a bit of hand-stitching at the mouth of the bag...

...and the insertion of a length of cording or tubing in each handle...

...for structural support.

Textured 'Neutrals' Journal Cover- Part 1 of 2

Laying out a few tangles of neutral yarn remnants...

...and adding bits of silk, lace, and cotton gauze.

Tufts of camel fiber, tussah silk, flax, neps, coppery strands of Angelina...

...bamboo viscose thrums, silk noil and milk fiber all come next.

The marbled layout, as seen through the foam underlayment resist...

...and through the first layer of wool.

This dot of blue keeps the 'front' and 'back' sides straight.

The fully felted piece...

...blocked and drying.

Making a journal cover in 'neutrals' was a recent challenge...

...but I didn't want it to be too plain.

Looking through my bins of fabric scraps and fiber...

...I pulled out everything that I could find in neutral tones...

...and added it to the mix.

Next time: the finished piece...

...with faux burl wood bookmark.
