'Love Wins' Table Runner- Part 3

Once the project is dry...

...each short end is carefully trimmed...

...leaving an overlapping bit of silk gauze.

The long ends are also trimmed...

                                                  ...to form a neat rectangle.

The runner is placed on a length of solar pool cover...

...and the silk gauze is folded to the back on each short end.

                                                     The project is wetted out...

                                                      ...and felting begins anew.

                                                       Mid-way through felting...

...the inclusions are beginning to crinkle...

                                              ...and become delightfully textural.

The front of the finished piece...

                                                           ...and the back.

                                                                Close-ups...

...of the pre-felt pieces, crinkly silk gauze and inclusions.

This runner was created as a gift...

...for the wedding of a wonderful friend of mine...

                                                    ...and his long-term partner.

                                                  Congratulations, you two...

...here's wishing you a lifetime of love...

                                                           ...and great joy!

'Love Wins' Table Runner- Part 2

Adding three thin layers...

                                                         ...of merino wool...

...to the back side of the project.

Flipping the piece back to the design side...

...and checking to see whether any shifting has occurred.

                                                             Felting begins...

                                                          ...with rubbing...

                                                 ...that increases in pressure...

...as the colored fibers begin to migrate through the white wool.

Once the soft felt passes the pinch test...

...the piece is fully dried over a length of PVC pipe.

Next time: the runner is trimmed, fully felted and completed.

'Love Wins' Table Runner- Part 1

Cutting small squares...

...from sheets of black and dark blue commercial pre-felt.

Drafting the basic design on a piece of craft paper...

...and covering it with a layer of bubble wrap.

                                                Applying the pre-felt squares...

                                                 ...to the bubble wrap surface...

                                        ...following the paper pattern underneath.

Cutting round and oval 'inclusions' from quilt batting...

...and thin sheets of fabric interfacing.

Carefully placing a layer of black silk gauze atop the pre-felt bits...

...and scattering the fabric surface with inclusions.

Next time: I add the wool!

Is it a Scarf or a Table Runner?

Laying out a layer of warm brown wool roving...

                                                       ...and wetting it out.

A layer of white merino is next...

...(laid out in a perpendicular direction).

Handspun wool yarn is applied to the project surface...

                                                     ...as an embellishment...

...and thin wisps of white wool are added...

                                                   ...where yarn crosses yarn...

...to help it to 'felt in'.

                                                    Mid-way through felting...

...the colored wool is beginning to migrate through the white.

The back side of the scarf/table runner...

                                             ...and the yarn-embellished front.

                                            The completed project (back side)...

                                                               ...and front.

I made this project as a Christmas gift...

...and because it can be used in either of two disparate ways...

...I left it up to the recipient to decide...

                                              ...'scarf or table runner'?!?!! :)
