The Very Last Gasp...Of The Pillows

Orange and gold pillow.

Half of my 2010 Christmas pillows.

Tri-color pillow with silk scarf inlay.

The tri-color pillow back.

I know, I know...

...you thought this day would never come! Giggle.

Yes, this is finally the last of my (many) pillows...

...and I think we will all be happy to move on!

Both of these pillows were gifts for blog-reading friends...

...so I couldn't surprise them with the 'what'.

I did, however, ask for specific color requests...

...so that they would be sure to please their recipients.

The orange and gold pillow was made with ribbon-like wool strips...

...prefelt bits and wool roving.

For the tri-colored pillow, I used wool roving...

...and a section of silk scarf to help connect the colors.

The backing fabric that you see was extra fabric from a long ago project...

...curtains for a house I no longer live in. :)

Sky and Clouds Scarf

Using a batt that I made on Cardatrice, my drum carder, in various shades of blue...

I made a thin, light and soft scarf with bits of diced-up silk...

...and some beautiful curly locks in shades of teal and aqua.

It makes me yearn for a summer sky...

...with the white silk bits the scudding clouds, blowing in the breeze.

Orange Scarf (More Kool-Aid!)

I wanted to make something warm and colorful for a friend of mine who 'Winters' in Cleveland (she spends the rest of the seasons there, too...but I think one notices it most in the Winter!!)

I made it large, so that it could be used as a scarf or shawl.

I used white roving and added squares of printed sari silk that I cut irregularly with my rotary cutter.

I also added some yellow candlewick cotton thread and (bien sur!) my favorite
wiggly fringe.

When I had felted it, I dyed it in orange Kool-Aid.

It's a Christmas gift, but I mailed it last week...due to my penchant for
crafting and shopping months early...and also so that if she chooses to open it early, she'll have at least another month of use.

This is disturbing to many people.

One very good friend in particular (who shops in December like everyone else) has banned me from discussing my Christmas shopping in July or my summer holiday crafting with her.

Her quote? "Heather, this is the one thing I really hate about you!" Har.

Fall Scarves

I bought a ton of crazy 'Tony the Tiger' blended roving that has orange and white and black through it...and I had been wanting to use it.

...also, it was getting to be Fall, and I wanted to make some scarves in colors that would reflect the season.

Fearing what happened to me in the 'glorious roving turned dark and understated scarf', however, I added some bits of bright orange and yellow to give 'Mr. Tony' some extra 'light'.

I also popped in some pieces of Coats and Clarks "Speed-Cro-Sheen" Mercerized Cotton (a number 3 crochet cotton) in yellow. (It has a great retro label and was another thrifted find; it has to be nearly as old as I am!!)

For the other scarf, I started with a white Habotai silk scarf (rolled hems already completed by the manufacturer, thank-you-very-much!) and added tan and dark brown (nearly black) blobs of fiber.

I sandwiched in some squares of printed sari silk in bright blue by placing
small amounts of fiber over them so that they would 'felt in'.

I also put lots of wiggly fringes on this one...which make me happy.

Silk Scarf Reincarnation

This scarf has circles of lavender pencil roving in it. As you can see, it looks prettier when held up to the light
(although I think I see a funny 'face' in that one photo!

It was my first attempt at making a scarf that has a 'cobwebby' appearance...using just two thin layers of fiber. My previous scarves have been a little stiffer and less flexible. This is quite soft and malleable.

I added some curly locks ('love me' some curly locks!) and added slivers of an old silk scarf that I hacked up with my rotary cutter. (Hostile much?) :)

Thrift stores are great sources of cheap and (often) ugly silk scarves. When chopped into bits and felted into scarves and garments, they take on a wholly new and charming character...let's call it a 'Scarf Reincarnation', shall we?

I'm hoping that the wearer allows the ends to 'fly free' in the sun for a most attractive appearance.
