"In For A Penny, In For A Pound" Wet-Felted Hat

Laying out circles of merino wool...

...and covering them with luscious merino/silk blend roving...

...dyed by my friend, Joan Berner.

Flipping the resist to side two.

The fully wrapped (open) resist, prior to felting.

Fulling the finished hat.

Applying clamps to 'fix' the shape while drying.

Removing the clamps.

Sewing a hem in the finished hat.

Two years ago...

...I made a wonderful hat under the tutelage of my friend, Dawn (a master hat-maker!).

Unfortunately, after wearing it throughout my trip to Germany in December...

...I somehow managed to wash it in the washing machine with a load of trip laundry! :(

Seeing as I had already 'tested the waters' with my previous two projects...

...I decided to throw caution to the wind and make another one...

...this time, for me!

Since I desired a soft, pliable hat that could easily be shaped...

...I laid out very thin layers of merino/silk blend roving.

I'm afraid that the finished hat is not quite rigid enough, however...

...because it didn't retain its 'telescoped' shape, once it had been worn a couple of times. (Alas!)

Next time: I go a little too far in the other direction...

...and make a really thick hat.

Drats...hats!!! ;)

Kapelusz super. A z zapinkami wygląda jak tort urodzinowy.

drats on washing the other hat! Maybe you can re-purpose it for something else? I have never tries one of these hats. I like how it seems to fold into itself!

Oh no! Washing a felted hat...can the fabric be re-purposed?

Not as easy as it sounds, this hat making!

Very fun! I love the shape of the dried hat after using all those clamps.

Karolina--Oh, yes...experimentation is the best (and most fun) way to get better! :)
...and you're right...it does look like a cake!
Kelly and Andrea--I think I'll keep it for 'dress-ups' for my future grandbabies! :)
Rachel--Not for me, no!
Laura--Thanks. It's my friend Dawn's great design!

I love the way you used clamps to shape the top during drying process. Would be very hard to duplicate that with a knitted hat tho.

Beautiful hat Heather! I love the shape and colours. If its not keeping its shape and seems a little soft, could you work it some more? I'd try working it more and stretching and blocking it again.. it might help.. would be a shame to waste it.

Vivian--So true!! :)
Deborah--I've actually been wearing it, opened up, as more of a 'witches hat' while walking in the mornings with my neighbor. (Luckily for me, he doesn't embarrass easily! :)

I rather like the look of this one, but I guess you were not pleased. Oh well. :)

Sandie--It needs 'something', still, alas. :(
