                                                                  For side two...

                                             ...I added long, dyed wool locks...

                                               ... and more pre-felt pieces...

                                     ...then covered the whole project with pieces of a batt...

                                                    ...'infused' with cotton dots.

                                                     Mid-way through felting...

                                                    ...I cut a slit for the handle.

                                                  ...on both the front side...

                                                           ...and the back.

                                        I also stitched a fabric lining into the tote...

                            ...so it's sturdy enough to carry things like fresh produce or books.

                                                       The finished tote...

                                        Knitting small lengths of handspun wool yarn...

                                                      ...into a 'tote' shape.

                                                  With all of this crazy texture...

                                                     ...and 'boingy' locks...

                         ...I was afraid that the knitted piece wouldn't 'felt in'...

                                                     ...(like in this failed project).

                                                              My solution?
                             
                                         I basted my knitting to a piece of pre-felt...

                                       ...using a large-eyed needle and wool yarn!

                                           Wetting out the back side of the project.

Hand-dyed silk from my friend, Lorin.

                                  Laying out scraps of old projects and pieces of yarn...

                                             ...then covering them with layers of wool...

                                                         ...from a hand-carded batt.

                                     
                                                         
                                                      More yarn, pre-felt snippets...

                                             ...and pieces of bright silk make up side two.

                                 Wrapping the wool to the front to cover the embellishments.

                                                        (I'm working inside-out again.)

                                                More layers of batt are added to each side...

                                                               ...and felting is begun!

'Rocky Mountain' Hats- Part 2 of 2

Most of the colorful silk pieces that I used...

                                               ...are only really visible from the top.

                                    The hat interior is actually brown corriedale wool.

                                                  (Not the grey of the photograph.)

                                   Because we used different weaves and weights of silk...

                                             ...from various thrifted garments...

                            ...we found that some of the pieces 'felted-in' easily and some didn't.

                                              I like this snippet of color on the brim...

                                               ...and this bright pink 'medallion'.

                                     Both enliven otherwise quiet areas of the hat.
                               

                                                While blocking and drying this piece...

                                         ...I fashioned a 'bowler hat' kind of brim.

                                           Next time: a tote made from fibery leftovers!

                                                  Tylar...happily wielding a pair of scissors...

                                         ...as she lays out bits of subtle, earth-toned silks.

                                          Cathy chose bold colors and prints for hers...

                                        ...(and yes, there was a bit of arm-twisting involved!)...

                                        ...but they muted down beautifully in the finished hat!

                               While felting with friends, there's always a lot of laughter!

                           ...plus additional roving donated by a sheep named Moochi! :)
