Felted Vessel Experiments- Part 1 of 2

Cutting a circle from foam underlayment...

...and covering it with layers of wool roving.

                                                       At the pre-felt stage...

...two slits are cut into the top layer...

                                                ...and the resist is removed.

                                                         A handle is created...

...by wrapping the middle strip of pre-felt around several felt cords...

...and stitching it closed with wool yarn.

After the project is fully felted...

...the ends of the cords are pinned into place for drying.

                                                         The finished vessel...

                                                        ...is the perfect size...

...for hair elastics and other small dresser items.

Next time: a slightly more decorative vessel!

The finished bag...

...drying in the cool Rocky Mountain air...

...and modeled by the charming and delightful, Buff Palm.

During felting, the wool yarn and pre-felt bits...

...'melt' into the body of the bag.

                                                          The bag interior...

                                                            ...with pocket.

The combination of a short loop (on one side of the bag)...

...and a long loop on the other...

                                             ...combine to form a 'complicated'...

...and secure closure for this bag.

Red Bag With Complicated Closure- Part 1

Making marks for later closure placement...

...and fashioning a rounded pocket resist.

Placing a layer of roving and silk gauze onto the resist surface...

...then adding the pocket resist and a layer of silk gauze.

Covering side one of the resist...

...with layers of colorful merino wool.

After flipping the project to side two...

                                                  ...layers of wool are added...

...and additional layers of wool are added...

...to both sides of the project...

...before the bag is wetted out.

                                                  Lengths of merino wool yarn...

...and snippets of pre-felt in various colors...

...are applied to the bag surface.

Cords are prepared for the closure...

...one short one and one long one...

...and are wrapped with wool yarn.

Next time: the cords are felted...

...and attached to the bag surface.

...with striped layers of wool roving...

...(using different colors on each side).

                                              Adding pre-felt embellishments...

                                                            ...corner cords...

                                             ...and 'squiggles' of boucle yarn...

                                                      ...to the resist surface...

                                               ...and repeating the process...

                                                            ...on side two.

After the project passes the pinch test...

...a circle is cut from the center of the partially felted wool...

                                                ...and the resist is removed.

                                                       The felting continues...

                                                   ...in different orientations...

...until the project is fully felted...

...and the hat is pinned and clipped for drying.
