Yarn Embellished Two-Way Scarves- Part 2 of 2

The green side of the pre-felt...

...with yarn embellishment.

The wisps of roving that I put down first on the purple side...

...(and last on the green side)...

...help to anchor the blended yarn in the pre-felt.

Believing in the old adage, "Waste not, want not"...

...I used the wispy trimmed-off pre-felt bits to make this project.

Using nylon thread, I hand-stitched the ends of each 'slice' together...

...turning each one into a circle.

During felting.

The final fulling.

(Note the shrinkage from the last photo!)

The finished scarves...

...with one purple side and one green side...

...for 'two-way' wear!

And for you highly observant types...

...yes, I did remove the nylon hand-stitching prior to giving these away! :)

Felting with synthetic fibers is always an experiment.

Sheer, open-weave synthetic fabrics often make beautiful nuno felt...

...and loose synthetic fibers can be 'trapped' with wool fibers...

...to create exciting felt embellishments.

Because I knew that this yarn was primarily acrylic...

...I laid out light smatterings of wool fiber, perpendicular to the yarn layout...

...to help hold it in place.

Making the scarf in two colors...

...allows the wearer to choose which side to wear with which outfit!!

Yarn-Embellished Two-Way Scarves- Part 1 of 2

A skein of blended alpaca/acrylic yarn that I won in a giveaway...

...from my wonderful friend, Denise.

Laying out lengths of yarn and small blobs of bright roving...

...then larger sections of color...

...(mostly purples).

A perpendicular layer of green roving comes next...

...covering the previous layout.

Horizontal stripes of the gifted yarn enliven the green layer.

Next, the piece is only partially felted...

...and allowed to dry.

Preparing to trim the pre-felt into two equal pieces.

As you may have already noticed...

...I created lots of scarves this year for Christmas giving.

These came about by way of a lovely, soft skein of yarn...

...which I received from a good friend in a blog giveaway.

I laid it out lengthwise on one side of the scarf...

...and widthwise on the other, for a little change of pace.

Next time: the finished scarves...

...and I think you'll recognize some pre-felt bits that I used in a blog post recently! :)
