Using foam resists to make
cylindrical...
...and
cone-shaped pre-felts in bright colors.
Centering each pre-felt shape within a 'yarn circle'...
...and stitching them to the mat with nylon thread...
...for a
3-D effect.
Play mat number two with 'extensions' in different colors.
A view of the mats from the
top...
...and from the
side.
Using wool roving in bright colors...
...I fashioned various pre-felt shapes using foam resists.
I hand-stitched these 'extensions'...
...to the center of each 'yarn-defined' circle or diamond...
...with sturdy nylon thread.
Next time: I prepare the mats for final felting.

Wonderful - these are great encouragements for exploration!
I'm loving this!
I would like felt the pieces on the mat (betwin the layers of wool). But I like your baby-mat ;)
LG Elke
Rachel--That's my hope!! :)
Andrea--Thanks!!
LG Elke--This entire piece will be felted further in parts 4 and 5...so stay tuned! :)
You can use linen thread too, to sew the extensions in place ....
I use it all the time.
It doesn't "felt in" and it's better to see when you want to pull it out again .... ;-)
Els--That's so interesting, since the only other time I've used linen thread was as an embellishment that was intended to 'felt in'!

I'll keep it in mind for future projects, though. Thanks! XO-
