'Flirty' Two Layer Plant-Dyed Shawl

Adding black wool roving to the edges of a plant-dyed piece of silk gauze...

...then covering the 'whole shebang' with a layer of black silk gauze...

...and in the process, 'sandwiching in' a collar of roving...

...embellished with small squares of white pre-felt.

The finished shawl with collar and ruffled top edge.

A view from the back.

(The prints from the plant dyeing are a bit more visible here.)

The finished shawl...

...'on location' in Spain! :)

While playing around, mid-week in Portugal...

...I decided to try a technique similar to one that Claudia Burkhardt had demonstrated for us at Feltfull.

I sandwiched a border of black roving and small, white, pre-felt squares...

...between a one layer of black...

...and one layer of white silk gauze that I had plant dyed (but didn't much like).

Because the edges of the silk were not hemmed...

...I 'trapped' the silk along the top edge of the shawl with wool...

...resulting in a soft, narrow ruffle.

The finished scarf falls as two loose layers of un-hemmed silk...

...connected by its embellished wool collar.

Felted Collar and Brooch- Feltfull 2013

Laying out wool, novelty yarn and dyed silk hankies for a pre-felt.

(The reverse side was decorated, as well.)

After drying, irregular plastic and glass marbles were tied into the piece with cotton string...

...and the brooch was felted a bit more.

To finish it off...

...some of the 'pods' were cut open to reveal their embellished insides.

For the collar, I laid out merino wool...

...shapes cut from pre-felt, silk and rayon fabrics, and yarn...

...then stuffed and tied bits of bubble wrap into the finished pre-felt...

...leaving some sections smooth (for ruffles).

A close-up of the spiral-accented cord and rayon ruffle.

A vintage button and hand-stitched buttonhole form the closure.

The finished collar...

...nestled in the warm summer grass.

Claudia Burkhardt's work has a lovely, feminine aesthetic...

...and the above projects are ones that I made in her class at Feltfull.

Sitting and chatting and stitching with Claudia and my fellow classmates...

...was a lovely, peaceful way to spend the last two days of our workshop...

...almost like the 'sewing bees' of old! :)

Feltfull 2013 Impressions- The Netherlands

Our beautiful studio space...

...and some literal 'impressions' using plants for dyeing.

We visited farms and botanical gardens...

...and enjoyed a mini fashion show starring Vilte's students!

There were museums and exhibitions...

...but we also spent peaceful hours enjoying the natural beauty of this wonderful country.

Some of us also made some veeerrry colorful art-to-wear pieces...

...like hats...

...and jewelry!

I couldn't wait any longer.

I just had to show you the photos from my incredible class in The Netherlands!

There were caring and amazingly talented teachers...

...a large group of experienced feltmakers from all over the world...

...and a lovely studio in which to work.

In short, my week at Feltfull was a beautiful and memorable experience...

...and I'm happy to say that I now have a lovely group of new friends! (Yay!)

I'll return to regular posting again in July after my 'blog break'.
