Adding additional layers of wool...

                                                 ...to each side of the resist.

                                                Rubbing and rolling the project...

                                                ...until it passes the 'pinch' test.

                                            Cutting the bottom of the hat open...

                                                     ...to remove the resist.

                                           Turning the project right-side out...

                                                    ...and continuing to rub...

                                                        ...and roll the piece...

                                            ...regularly changing its orientation...

                                                            ...for even felting.

                                         Next time: the hat begins to take shape.

Trimming a piece of patterned silk to size...

...to showcase the design.

                                                   After setting the silk aside...

                      ...two layers of merino wool are applied to the resist surface...

                                                        ...and wetted out.

                                      The silk is applied to the wet wool surface...

                                               ...covered with the foam resist...

                                        ...and a second piece of silk is applied...

                                                             ...and wetted out.

                           Wool from side one is wrapped up and over the resist...

                                      ...and layers of wool are applied to side two...

                                                            ...and wetted out.

                                                    Next time: felting begins!

'No Particular Place to Go'- Part 2

Employing a herringbone layout...

                                       ...and purposely leaving a few open areas.

                                                       Layer number two.

                                     After some rubbing and a scant bit of rolling...

                                     ...it's now a soft piece of pre-felt for my stash.

                    
                                                         The project front...

                                                               ...and back.

                                         Laying out a scribble of variegated yarn...

                                      ...(nearly as loosely spun as pencil roving)...

                                        ...and felting it with warm, soapy water.

                           The finished piece has a nice open-weave appearance...

                                                 ...and it felted in no time!

Sometimes...

                                                   ...I like to go into the studio...

                                              ...with no particular goal in mind.

                                                             In this piece...

                                        ...roving, fabric and bits of failed crochet...

                                       ...become part of a textural pre-felt piece...

                                                     ...with hidden inclusions.

                                                    This experimental project... 

                               ...made from lengths (and clumps) of silk selvedge...

                                           ...plus wool from a soft, bright batt...

                                      ...is likewise felted just to the pre-felt stage...

                        
                                                 ...so it can be used later...

                                        ...in some 'as yet unthought-of' project! :)

                                    Next time: two more small felting experiments.

                                       ...and attaching it to the felt hanging loops.

                                                     The jewel-like colors...

                                           ...to those of the original silk scarves.
