Hindu Deity Tote Bag- Part 1 of 3

Trimming the silk scarf into a circular shape using the resist as a pattern.

The scarf.

Adding roving underneath the edges of the scarf circle, and to the tote base.

More roving.

Laying out the handle section of the bag.

Wetting out the 'design side' of the project.

Since I'm working inside-out, this is actually the back side of the scarf.

My friend is a blue/green kind of girl...

...and since she's practically worn out the last felt tote that I made her...

...her August birthday seemed the perfect occasion to make her another as a gift!

From my 'scarf stash', I discovered a wonderful gauzy silk scarf...

...with the image of a beautiful Hindu deity on it.

I decided to use it as the design element on this bag...

...much as I did with the black and white messenger bags.

Using a circular resist, I trimmed the scarf...

...so that the image would be centered after cutting out the handle.

I ringed the resist with blue-green roving...

...to help the scarf felt well around the edges.

Next time: adding white roving and laying out the tote bag back.

Riet--It's a large purse with an open top (no flap or closure) used to carry 'stuff' like books or a sweater...like this one http://woollove-functional-fiberart.blogspot.com/2011/03/gerbera-daisy-tote-bag-with-beading.html

That scarf is really neat, it should make for a beautiful bag. But when do you not make beautiful bags? Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

I'm glad your Cleveland Brown's table runner was given a place of honor too. Very nice, obviously appreciated. :)

Thanks so much, ladies!!
Yes, Fiona-that roving (all used up now) was really nice...one reason why I keep risking S&W roving buys despite the occasional 'bleeder'! :)

this is looking gorgeous already, (like all your other projects), can't wait to see what it looks like finished.

I really like your baby blanket too. The dog and spider are cute and very unique, remind of Charlotte's Web, one of my favorite children's books.

Vivian--Thanks! Charlotte's Web is a favorite of mine, too. Since I'm never in a barn unless I'm at a Sheep and Wool Festival, I often think of that book when I'm among 'wooly goodness'!
