Pod Love: Using My Felted Cord

It seems like everyone in 'blogland' lately...

...has been making some sort of pod!

I really like them and love the idea of making a number of them in different colors...

...to hang in my trees (to the consternation of my neighbors!) :)

Because I wanted to be able to tie it high in my tree...

...as a home for a bird or animal who might not feel safe, otherwise...

...it needed a long cord.

I used a pod-shaped resist...

...and covered it with variegated red, black and brown roving.

As I felted the pod...

...I made sure to felt in the 'fluffy' end of the cord as well.

After my felt passed the 'pinch test'...

...I cut an oval opening, removed the resist, and continued felting.

When my pod was completed and rinsed...

...I hung it to dry with a Gertie ball inside to create the proper shape.

I'm rather glad that no one was filming me as I teetered on my step-stool to hang it...

...but it might have been a hit on "Funniest Home Videos"! Giggle.

Great job, those cords are really coming in handy. I like them in both of your applications. Can you show me how to make a pod? I want to hang one in my tree.
I put some fringe along the bottom of one of my "jackety shawls." Never done fringe before, but turned out okay, have to show you. Have a great day.

yeah! another pod in the trees! I was just looking at mine this morning, and wondering if anything will ever move into it. I did have a young mockingbird picking at the wool tie. It must have figured it was too hard to remove so it flew over to my yarn scrap basket I have hanging in a pine tree and snatched a bright green scrap.

I love it, and I hope some needy bird makes their home in it right away. How thoughtful of you. :)

Cameron-I'd love to see your new fringe!! I'll send you some photos of the pod resist, so you know how I drew it...and the size, etc.
Kelly-I'm not sure that anything will make a home in mine, either. It may be a little close to my compost pile (too much 'traffic', maybe?)They're great as outdoor decoration, though!!
Sandie-Thanks! It was fun to make.

The birds in your garden are so lucky to live in such a beautiful house!

Thanks, Trudis! I see you've made a bunting flag for Angela, too!
What a lovely idea for a 'new teenager', isn't it?

You've beaten me to it. I had in mind to make nesting pouches in felt - another project I haven't found time for yet. Do post a pic when you've got them all in the tree.

This is wonderful. I think I'd love to make a bird box style pod for my tree. Have you had any feathered friends move in yet?

That's a cool idea about the bird box! I've been wondering whether this pod may be a bit too deep to be really functional as a nesting place for birds.
So far, only spiders have found a home in my pod. :)
