'Schmatta' Journal Cover- Part 1 of 2

Old, raggedy pieces of cloth and yarn...

                                                      ...and pencil roving...

...are laid onto the resist surface.

(A quite satisfying way to use up old scraps!)

The project is then covered with layers of wool roving...

                                                         ...and wetted out.

Additional layers of wool are added to side one...

...and the journal cover is flipped to side two.

The center of the second side is filled in with striped roving...

...to differentiate it from the 'design side' of the piece.

                                                             Felting begins...

...and after a bit of rubbing and rolling...

...a slit is cut into the (still soft) felt.

Next time: the resist is removed...

                                               ...and the journal is completed.

I rather like the stripy inside of this one, too!

Thanks, Rachel! That stripy wool is part of a huge ball that I purchased for felting, but I've found that it really doesn't felt well on its own and must be mixed with other wools. It's a shame, because I have two different colourways and I originally thought that it would make such lovely projects!

It's already looking fantastic, even before it's finished. :)

Deborah--The wool is Wollknoll's striped 'top' and several of us have tried felting it with very poor results. (Conclusion, buy roving, not 'top' if you order from them!)
