Portugal- Rust-Dyed Shibori Nuno Shawl

Laying out silk and wool for a 'dryer felt' nuno shawl.

The finished felt made a great place to catnap...

...and it was also appropriated for use as a cape!!

Accordion pleating my shawl, prior to tying, with classmate and 'dyeing guru' Terriea...

...(The fantastic eucalyptus-dyed silk scarf in my hair was a gift from her, as well!)

The clothesline fills with eco-dyed projects of all shapes and sorts!

Isn't it incredible what a little rusty metal can do?!? :)

A close-up of some of the wonderful patterns created by the pleating and tying.

The finished shawl at home.

For my 'first ever' dryer felt project...

...I made a very simple white wool and silk shawl.

The technique involves rolling the project in thin plastic sheeting...

...and drying it on air only until felted...

...unrolling and re-rolling between 10-15 minute dryer sessions.

Once felted and dried (and used as a sleeping bag and a superhero cape)...

...I pleated and tied it, soaked it in a solution of vinegar and water...

...and simmered it in a pot with pieces of rusted metal.

I'm happy that the combination of Terriea's perfect pleats and my haphazard ones...

...worked together in harmony to create this incredible design!! :)

Heather, you're just being kind. We'd a wonderful time with the group. Storm and the cat are so sweet. I'm really happy to read your blog of good captures.

Love the catnap photo - leave it to a cat to find the best, most warm and cushy sleeping place. :)

Nicely done!
