My Own Couture Garment- Part 2

Close-up of the stitching on my handmade felt button.

Adding a loop to the back.

Cutting black leather to size.

Covering all of the ugly foundation stitches.

The garment back.

A close-up of the golden-brown bits in the felt.

The garment front.

As you can see...

...my finished garment ended up being rather straightforward in style.

Despite a week spent making flounces and flourishes...

...in the end, the only couture detail I could commit to was a button! :)

Maybe this is one of the joyful lessons of mid-life...

...accepting one's own personal style, and fashioning something to suit?

After all, this is a project that (for once) won't be given away...

...and one which has already found a home among my fall wardrobe!

You created a beautiful top Heather! I love your style - I'm not really a flourish / flounce girl either :) And your button is FANTASTIC! did you stitch or glue the leather back on?

Hope you wear it lots xx

I think you and I have very similar tastes. While I appreciate the beautiful details of flounces and such, I always find myself drawn to simple designs. This is beautiful and hopefully you will always be happy when wearing it!! :)

Thanks so much, all!!
(I really felt like the 'plain little sister' of my group, with all of their beautiful and exciting creations...but I was afraid that I would get it home and never wear it if I made it any 'wilder'! Grin)
P.S. Deborah--The leather is glued on (Sobo).

Very nice button, and it goes so very well with your top. Nothing at all "plain little sister" about you either, and I have to tell you, your pictures do not do you justice. You are even lovelier in person. :)

Oh Heather! So amazing! I love the simpicity of the cut...simplicity is often harder to attain than frills!:) And the shifting greens are gorgeous...with just that little hint of coppery colour...I almost never keep anything I make...in my case it all gets sold...isn't it just such a special thing to set out with the intention (and to actually follow through!) of making something...just for you. Love the button too!

Fiona--Thanks so much! I loved the poetry of your full moon indigo dyeing post, too. You're such a lovely writer!

Beautiful work. It is couture, you made it especially for your tastes. I learned a lesson in making felted fabric for my coat. While I love the fabric I created, it is unlikely that I will ever wear the coat.

I think it's very smart to think about what your style is & then make something that fits.

Love the button!

Also, I wanted to add: Liz Clay creates lovely high fashion items, some that are ready for the runway. But I noticed at this Fling & in '09, her personal style seems to be simple, elegance. IMHO, that is what you created in your piece.

Shelly--You're right about Liz's uncomplicated personal style. I just love how she dresses herself!
