Owl Birthday Placemats- Part 1

Laying out variegated green roving.

Adding 'owl parts'.

The birds come into focus with their carrot-like beaks.

Check out this guy's Peter Falk eyebrows! (May you rest in peace, Peter.)

My eldest daughter has a birthday this month...

...and she really loves owls!

I'd been wanting to try making placemats as a single, larger piece and then splitting them into two...

...so this seemed like the perfect time to try it.

I laid out several layers of variegated green roving...

...then added owl designs with colored wool roving.

The felting was easy peasy...

...just wetting and rolling a piece of flat felt, with no care for the edges.

Next time: the felting...and the finished mats.

ooooh, the pre-felted owls are adorable. I can't wait to see the finished project. Have a wonderful holiday weekend.

Love those eyebrows! I remember when I was just learning I would make flat panels just to see how the wool would felt. I just cleaned out a drawer filled with them. Your daughter will love these "wise" placemats!

Wow, nice to see those owls come to life (and yes, the "carrots" do make them!). Will be intrigued to see how you separate the two mats.

Delightful. Owls can look either very serious or very cute - it will be interesting to see how yours turn out!

Thanks, all!
I haven't given them to my daughter yet, but luckily, she doesn't read my blog! :)

The owls are going to be adorable. I am looking forward to the finished place mats. You are quite the artist, my friend. :)

Definitely love to see the turn out. Your works are always inspiring. I love the process of creating something for loved ones with own hands. During the process you'll think of her/him and of what she/him may like. That's the process I enjoy.
Thanks for your sweet comment of my nuno felt dresses.

Thanks, Terrie! This particular daughter is, shall we say, 'less fond' of felted items than my other three, so I have to put a lot of thought into the things that I make for her. I'm always happy when I think of something I can make that will please her. :)

Thanks, Kim!! They are kind of cute, but if I do it again, I'll take better measurements, since they came out more square than I wanted.
