Raw Locks Bedroom Rug- Part 1

Laying out raw wool in concentric circles...
...with the tips that were outermost on the sheep facing down.

Covering the locks with orange wool/silk roving.

Filling the center with white wool roving.

Topping the layout with a layer of cheesecloth.

As I think you may already know...

...I've been having a bit of a love affair with raw locks, lately!!

I wanted to make a piece using wool from my dwindling stash...

...of Black Romney, Jacob Hoggett and Icelandic fleeces.

I thought a new bedroom rug would be a nice project...

...fun to make (not too large) and super cozy on my toesies! :)

I laid out raw locks in circles...

...making each ring from a different breed of fleece.

Black Romney wool looks the most grey and tan...

...Jacob Hoggett locks show up as 'poufs' of black, brown and white...

...and the black and white Icelandic wool is 'doing the wild thing' and sticking out everywhere!!

I covered the surface of the locks with a layer of blended silk and wool roving in my favorite color (plus white for the middle)...

...and wrapped the whole shebang with a layer of cheesecloth.

Next time...

...how the project looked during felting...

...and the finished rug!

this is going to be soooooo pretty! I cannot wait to see the final rug! Is the cheesecloth for the bottom?

Thanks, Deborah! Your rug with the red background was actually the inspiration and final push for ALL of my 'fleece-in-the-grease' projects! I decided that if you were strong and brave enough to try it, I might be able to manage it, too!!
(Mine is quite a bit smaller than yours, though! I'm 'working up' to a big one!) Giggle.

Thanks, Kelly! Yes--the orange and white are on the bottom, and you don't really see them in the finished rug. Because I had made that Black Romney doorway rug http://woollove-functional-fiberart.blogspot.com/2010/11/fleece-in-grease-throw-rug.html and wasn't happy with the white roving around the edges, I wanted to put something pretty on the bottom this time, in case it showed!

Love it! And I am sure all the creatures in my house would love it too which is why I don't dare make one unless I call it a cat bed or dog toy rather than a rug.....

Thanks, Riet--No...nothing seasonal this time! :)
Deb--I know! You'd need to use yours as a wall-hanging if you intended it for 'the humans' in your house!

can not wait to see this one finished! lovely colour combination. Now, the silk-merino will go underneath or on top?
Beautiful!

Thanks, ladies! Yes--it's nice and warm.
Mariana--The raw wool is on top and the silk/merino is on the bottom. You don't see too much of the orange once it's finished...just a little bit around the edges.
