A Brief Foray Into Bookmaking- Part 2 of ?

Choosing the perfect buckle is difficult, with all of these to choose from!

(Thanks, again, Elis for the 'stash'!!)

Instead of a leather thong and a button...

...to hold the book closed this time...

...I used a wider strip of leather...

                                                           ...and a buckle!

I also did my own thing while stitching in the signatures. :)

                                                     Here they are in place.

                                                         The finished journal.

Next time: I make an ominously monikered 'stab binding' book...

                                                         ...with felt accents.

A Brief Foray Into Bookmaking- Part 1 of ?

Erykah must have thought that our bookbinding cradle...

                                                     ...was a cat's cradle! ;)

Using pieces of cast-off green and brown leather...

...and a carved wooden button gifted to me by my friend, Elis...

...I proceeded to make a limp binding for this handmade book.

A leather thong acts as a tie closure.

                                                       The back of the book.

The closed book with a view of the waxed linen stitching...

...and the open book with the front page showing.

                                                        The finished book.

I am not a 'real' bookmaker...

...but while visiting with my friend, Lorin...

...(who happens to be a book arts teacher)...

...I did get a couple of 'notions'. :)

Stay tuned for a few more of these bookish posts!

Shimmery Silk Scarflette- Part 3 of 3

The finished scarf (wool side)...

                                                 ...with machine embellished...

                                                         ...silk additions...

                                                     ...in vibrant colourways!

A single buttonhole is cut and edged with stitching...

...and an iridescent button is added at the opposite end.

The dyed silk hankies are visible...

...as web-like lines on the project surface.

                                                Due to its reversible nature...

                                                 ...the scarflette can be worn...

                                                 ...with either the wool side...

                                                       ...or the fabric side...

                                                             ...outermost.

Shimmery Silk Scarflette- Part 2 of 3

Completing the rectangle...

...and adding a layer of bamboo and silk-blend fabric.

Wetting out the project and folding in the edges...

...then adding additional silk hankies to the project surface.

                                                    The reverse (wool) side.

                                             The finished scarflette (fabric side).

                                                    Using variegated thread...

...I machine embellished each silk circle...

...and with the same, multi-colored thread...

                                                   ...I fashioned a buttonhole.

                                                       The dyed silk hankies...

                                               ...appear as marble-like veins...

                                                       ...on the finished felt...

...and add to its shimmery appearance.

The fabric side of the finished project.

Next time: photos of the wool side...

...and several different ways to wear the scarflette.

Shimmery Silk Scarflette- Part 1 of 3

Cutting hand-dyed silk hankies into pieces...

...and stretching them out onto the bubble wrap surface.

                                                 Cutting circles of silk fabric.

Laying out nests of variegated wool roving...

                                                 ...and topping each one...

                                                       ...with a silk circle.

Once all of the silk pieces are in place...

...adding a thin layer of roving to create a rectangle.

Next time: a layer of blended bamboo and silk fabric is added...

                                                  ...and the layout continues.
