'No Particular Place to Go'- Part 1

Sometimes...

                                                   ...I like to go into the studio...

                                              ...with no particular goal in mind.

                                                             In this piece...

                                        ...roving, fabric and bits of failed crochet...

                                       ...become part of a textural pre-felt piece...

                                                     ...with hidden inclusions.

                                                    This experimental project... 

                               ...made from lengths (and clumps) of silk selvedge...

                                           ...plus wool from a soft, bright batt...

                                      ...is likewise felted just to the pre-felt stage...

                        
                                                 ...so it can be used later...

                                        ...in some 'as yet unthought-of' project! :)

                                    Next time: two more small felting experiments.

Pieced Nuno Pre-Felt Purses- Part 1

Pieces of printed silk from my stash...

                                      ...are covered with layers of merino roving...

                                                              ...wetted out...

                                            ...and fashioned into nuno pre-felts.

                                   To the surface of a piece of shimmery gold silk...

                                          ...lengths of silk selvedge are applied.

                                  The silk is covered with variegated wool roving...

                                                            ...wetted out...

                                                         ...rubbed, rolled...

                                                         ...and lightly fulled...

                                               ...to create another nuno pre-felt.

                                           Next time: more pre-felt preparations!

Oklahoma Hats- Part 4

From lengths of silk selvedge...

...leftover bits of silk...

                                                 ...and bright merino roving...

                                                ...a rectangle of felt is created.

                                    A circular resist is used to fashion the hat top...

                                                  ...so the shape stays 'true'...

                             ...and so it can be cut apart and used to make two hats!

                                                          Once the felt is dry...

                                                 ...the hat is quickly assembled...

                               ...by machine stitching the felt rectangle to the circle...

                                   ...and sewing the ends of the rectangle together.

                             Voila! A bright and cheery hat for a grey and gloomy day.

"Purse-onality"- Part 1

Pieces of lace, silk...

                                           ...blobs of hand-dyed alpaca fiber...

                                              ...and lengths of silk selvedge...

                                        ...are applied to the bubble wrap surface.

                                                        Colorful wool roving...

                                                             ...is added...

                                                ...in a 'checkerboard' pattern.

                                                    The project is wetted out...

                                                      ...and quickly felted...

                                                     ...to the pre-felt stage.
