'No Particular Place to Go'- Part 1

Sometimes...

                                                   ...I like to go into the studio...

                                              ...with no particular goal in mind.

                                                             In this piece...

                                        ...roving, fabric and bits of failed crochet...

                                       ...become part of a textural pre-felt piece...

                                                     ...with hidden inclusions.

                                                    This experimental project... 

                               ...made from lengths (and clumps) of silk selvedge...

                                           ...plus wool from a soft, bright batt...

                                      ...is likewise felted just to the pre-felt stage...

                        
                                                 ...so it can be used later...

                                        ...in some 'as yet unthought-of' project! :)

                                    Next time: two more small felting experiments.

Turning the bag right-side out...

                                             ...and continuing the felting process.

  
                                      Because I made the slightly risky decision...

                            ...to trim the silk to exactly the size of the resist...

                                                         ...during my layout...

                        ...I was 'rewarded' with a colorful stripe along the bag sides.

                                                        The finished purse...

                                                    ...drying en plein air! ;)

                                             The bag interior sports two pockets...

                        ...and the bag exterior boasts varying amounts of texture...

                                      ...from the trapped and layered inclusions.

                                             There's an aurora borealis pocket...

                                       ...and a 'World War I Flying Ace' pocket! ;)

                                                    Next time: I add a strap...

                                                      ...and finish the bag.

Additional layers of merino roving...

                                              ...are added to the bag surface...

                                                ...on each side of the project.

                                        This helps to 'lock in' the hanging loops.

                                                   A square of silk gauze...

                          ...and leftover scraps of pre-felt (one from my 'Rasta' Top Hat)...

                                     ...are applied to the surface of a small resist...

                                                 ...forming an internal pocket.
  
                                         But wait...this looks familiar, somehow!?!

                                                   Flipping the project over...

                           ...and wrapping the wool layers closely around the resist.

                                            Fashioning a second internal pocket... 

                              ...from silk gauze and various colors of merino roving.

                                             Now can you see what I saw?!? :)

                                                      Next time: felting begins!

Repeating the layering process...

                                                            ...on side two...

                            ...with the addition of silk gauze, yarn, fabric snippets...

                                              ...and colorful merino roving.

                                    This project is actually an experiment of sorts...

                          ...as I endeavor to discover which elements will be visible...
                                           

                                                    ...(or at least textural)...

                                            ...through the layer of silk gauze...  

                                     
                                                     ...on the bag exterior.                                     

                                       Preparing small cords for hanging loops...

                        ...(bits of painter's plastic held in place by small rubber bands...

                                                ...help to keep the ends dry)...

                                           ...and wrapping them with wool yarn.

                             The loops are inserted between layers of wool roving...

                                         ...to help them attach during felting.

                                         Next time: one of the interior pockets...

                                    ...morphs into an iconic comic strip scene! :)

Topping my purse resist with a layer of silk gauze...

...several strands of yarn...

                                       ...and snippets of fabric and finished felt...

                                          ...followed by a layer of merino roving.

                                        Wetting out the project with soapy water...

                                            ...adding a second layer of roving...

                                                ...and wetting it out again.

                                     Additional textural elements are now added...

                                           ...wool yarn, industrial felt washers...

                              ...and finished felt that's been cut into various shapes.

                                               Covering the whole shebang...

                                         ...with an additional layer of wool roving.

                                                  Flipping the project over...

                                ...and trimming off the overhanging silk and wool...

                                         ...except at the very bottom of the bag.
