'No Particular Place to Go'- Part 2

Employing a herringbone layout...

...and purposely leaving a few open areas.

                                                       Layer number two.

After some rubbing and a scant bit of rolling...

...it's now a soft piece of pre-felt for my stash.

                                                         The project front...

                                                               ...and back.

Laying out a scribble of variegated yarn...

...(nearly as loosely spun as pencil roving)...

...and felting it with warm, soapy water.

The finished piece has a nice open-weave appearance...

...and it felted in no time!

'No Particular Place to Go'- Part 1

Sometimes...

...I like to go into the studio...

...with no particular goal in mind.

                                                             In this piece...

...roving, fabric and bits of failed crochet...

...become part of a textural pre-felt piece...

                                                     ...with hidden inclusions.

                                                    This experimental project...

...made from lengths (and clumps) of silk selvedge...

...plus wool from a soft, bright batt...

...is likewise felted just to the pre-felt stage...

...so it can be used later...

...in some 'as yet unthought-of' project! :)

Next time: two more small felting experiments.

'Double Nuno' Scarf at Deb's- Part 2

Fulling the finished scarf.

Side one features blocks of colorful wool...

                                                      ...and small islands...

...of brightly colored and patterned silk.

Side two is composed of larger areas...

                                                                ...of colored...

                                                           ...and printed silk...

                                            ...and snipped-open circular areas...

                                             ...from the embedded paper rings.

Because it's made up of so many different prints and colors...

...I think it will coordinate with lots of winter outfits! :)

'Double Nuno' Scarf at Deb's- Part 1

While I was in Iowa some months ago...

...visiting my sweet and very talented friend, Deb...

...I decided to experiment a bit with silk...

                                                           ...paper rings...

                                                              ...and wool!

I fashioned a 'double nuno' sandwich...

...with silk fabric as the 'bread' and wool as the 'filling'.

After wetting the project out with soapy water...

...I covered it with a layer of painters' plastic...

...in preparation for rubbing and rolling.

                                                 Next time: the finished scarf!

Woven Pre-Felt Experiment with Silk Gauze

Alternating strips of brightly colored pre-felt...

                                                ...and strips of painter's plastic...

                                                      ...(cut to the same width)...

                                                     ...to form a woven grid.

                                                     Wetting out the project...

...and covering it with a layer of silk gauze.

                                                   Mid-way through felting...

...the colored fibers are beginning to migrate through the silk...

...and the plastic strips have rolled up into cords.

                                                           Fulling the project.

Overall, I consider this a failed experiment...

...as the intentional gaps left from the insertion of the plastic strips...

...were ultimately not all that interesting. :(

Next time: something that actually worked! :)
