Yarn-Embellished 'Patches' Tote- Part 8

The finished tote...

...with its 'riot of color' patches...

                                               ...is quite sturdy and capacious...

                                             ...and certainly won't be mistaken...

                                                     ...for anyone else's bag! ;)

I'll be taking an extended break from writing my blog...

...for travel, volunteering and 'family stuff'.

                                            Never fear, though, loyal readers...

...I'll return when I again have interesting projects...

...and the time to share them properly.

Yarn-Embellished 'Patches' Tote- Part 7

During the final felting...

                                                            ...care is taken...

                                                      ...(even during fulling)...

                                             ...to maintain a rectangular shape...

                                                     ...in the felted envelope.

While sorting through my 'leather stash'...

...I discovered a piece in acid green...

...and fashioned it into two strong handles.

The fully felted and dried project...

                                                       ...awaiting its handles.

                                                 Next time: the completed tote.

Yarn-Embellished 'Patches' Tote- Part 6

As the felting proceeds...

...the project is rubbed and rolled...

                                                     ...in various orientations.

The fabric pieces, yarn and wool...

                                                         ...are all beginning...

                                                          ...to 'meld' together.

                                                  Next time: felting continues...

...and a colorful leather strap is fashioned.

Yarn-Embellished 'Patches' Tote- Part 5

Applying a length of silk gauze...

...to the top portion of the project...

...(as later reinforcement for the straps).

                                                          Covering side one...

                                                 ...with layers of wool roving.

                                                  After wetting the project out...

                                                     ...it's turned to side two...

...and the application of silk gauze and wool...

                                                            ...are repeated.

                                                       Side two is wetted out...

                                                   ...and the felting continues...

...until the resist can safely be removed.

                                                 Next time: rolling and rubbing.

Yarn-Embellished 'Patches' Tote- Part 4

The embellished nuno pre-felt...

...is wrapped around a foam resist...

...and the overlapping seam and bottom edge...

                                                    ...are quickly hand-basted.

                                               The project is turned inside-out...

...and the excess nuno pre-felt at the bottom of the tote...

                                                         ...is trimmed away.

                                                            The foam resist...

...is then re-inserted into the pre-felt envelope.

Next time: I add additional silk and wool to the project.

Yarn-Embellished 'Patches' Tote- Part 2

Laying out one layer from a bright orange batt...

                                                 ...followed by a second layer.

Placing pieces of plain and patterned silk on the wool surface...

                                                  ...wetting the project out...

...and covering it with clear painter's plastic.

Felting the piece to the pre-felt stage.

                                              The finished and dried pre-felt...

...and its 'fraternal twin' from my last post. ;)

Next time: stitching with wool yarn!
