Persephone, Herman and Bob- Part 8 (Bob)

Bob, drying...

                                       ...with clips holding his goofy grin in place.

                                                 The pencil roving on his back...

                                            ...lends a 'garment like' appearance...

                             ...and his pupils are stitched on with embroidery floss...

                      ...so there are no small parts for a baby to pull off and swallow! 

                       I think his rakish moustache makes him look rather debonair..

                      ...but his textured tummy reminds us that he's 'all animal'!! ;)

                                                      The fully dried Bob (back)...

                                           ...and in use by one of my daughters.

Green wool circles create paw pads...

                                                    ...and green triangles...

                                                      ...and purple balls...

                                                ...are used to form Bob's eyes.

                                                      On the reverse side...

                                      ...pencil roving is used as an embellishment.

                                                    Mid-way through felting...

                                            ...the painter's plastic is removed...

                                             ...and a cut is made in the soft felt...

                                                   ...for easy resist removal.

                                                          A helpless Bob...

                            ...undergoes a rather painful whisker transplant surgery...

                                 ...and later convalesces in a soothing therapy pool.

                                        Next time: Bob in all of his hirsute glory! ;)

Persephone, Herman and Bob- Part 6 (Bob)

Preparing a paper pattern...

...and cutting it from foam floor underlayment.

    

                          Covering the resist with layers of wool from a bright blue batt. 
                          

                            Painter's plastic is used to help keep the mouth flange...

                                         ...from felting into the body of the puppet.
                                        

                                   Lighter blue wool is added to the resist surface...

                                                 ...the project is flipped over...

                       ...and the excess wool is wrapped up and around the resist.

                                                           Dyed wool nepps...

                                             ...are added to Bob's 'tummy area'...

                                       ...and covered with a Mawata silk hankie...

                   ...both for sheen and to help hold the nepps in place during felting.

Ruffled Silk Nuno Scarf- Part 2 of 2

As the felting continues...

                                     ...a lovely, nubbly texture begins to emerge...

                                         ...and the brightly colored silk hankies...

                                    ...begin to 'sing' on the wool side of the scarf. :)

          
                     You may recall this earlier project (shown below, on the right)...

                                          ...made from rust-colored, pleated silk?

                                      Both of the fabrics used are shown below...
                             
                             ...with today's pale blue piece just opposite the rust one.

                                          
                                      The dark lines, visible in the finished scarf...

                        
                        ...are areas where my wool 'tips' overlapped during layout.

                                                  The finished scarf (silk side)...

                                                          ...and wool side.                                                 

                                       Because only one layer of fiber was used...

                                 ...the finished scarf is quite soft and drapeable.

                               In these photos, the scarf looks bluer than it actually is.

                                (It's closer in color to the second photo in this post).

                                                        In a 'happy accident'...                      

                     ...the slightly scalloped scarf ends formed themselves during felting!

Ruffled Silk Nuno Scarf- Part 1 of 2

Assembling my supplies:

...pale blue ruffled silk fabric...

                                    ...and variegated tencel and wool blend roving.

                              Laying out a single layer of fiber on the fabric surface...

                                    ...(in the direction that I desire shrinkage most)...

                                               ...and wetting the project out.

                                                  A dyed Mawata silk hankie...

                                           ...is stretched to form a 'spiderweb'...

                                         ...and applied to the surface of the wool.

                                               The rubbing and rolling begins.

                                               Fulling the partially felted project...

                                   ...helps to tighten the fibers and shrink the scarf.
