'Stripy Orbs' Pillow- Part 3 of 3

Machine stitching the felt to the leather...

                                                ...with the wrong sides out.

An opening is left on one side...

                                                   ...for pillow form insertion...

...after the envelope is turned right-side out.

Strong, nylon thread is used to stitch up the opening.

                                            The three bumpy inclusions ('orbs')...

...remain quite elevated in the finished project...

...and the 'striping' comes from color blending...

                                                      ...during the layout.

If you look closely, you'll see a few marks and striations in the leather...

...but I rather like these little imperfections. :)

'Stripy Orbs' Pillow- Part 2 of 3

Felting...

                                                    ...and fulling the project.

                                                 The original pillow exterior...

                                                 ...now slated to be hidden.

Choosing leather for the pillow back.

                                                          The finished felt...

                                                            ...after drying.

                                                    Trimming it into shape.

Hemming one side of the project...

...and clipping the felt and leather together for machine stitching.

                                                Next time: the finished pillow.

'Stripy Orbs' Pillow- Part 1 of 3

Combining hairy wool roving and finished felt scraps...

                                                     ...to form firm fiber balls.

Laying out layers of spongy wool...

                                                   ...from Hog Island sheep...

...and placing the balls on the project surface.

                                                  Covering the entire layout...

...with merino wool in a warm, brown color.

Adding a strip of novelty silk to the layout...

                                                  ...and wetting it all out.

                                                    Mid-way through felting...

                                                           ...the back side...

...is starting to look better to me than the front. :(

This is the second pillow project, recently...

                                             ...that needed a tweak, mid-project.

(A little hitch in my felting mojo?)

Next time: I choose a shade of leather for the back...

...and assemble and stitch the felt envelope.

A Plethora of Peculiar Projects- Part 5 of ? (Cameo Slippers and Multiple-Resist Bag)

Adding additional fiber to each slipper...

...with a final layer of Hog Island wool...

...for extra soft sponginess!

Unfortunately, as I was laying out the last layers...

...I got distracted (or a little 'cocky'?)...

...and neglected to mark the cutting side on each slipper...

...and this was the end result! Waaaaah!

I did like the embossed-looking result, though...

...so I'll try to pay a bit more attention if I try it again! :)

****************************************************************
This is a multiple-resist purse that I started in Portugal.

It was to have three of these flap-like purse sections...

...but the center one sagged...

...and I couldn't figure out a work-around.

My solution?

I removed the center 'flap' and stitched up the gap...

...then promptly lost interest in ever finishing it...

...so here it languishes! :)

At the end of October...

...after the hustle and bustle of my eldest daughter's wedding has subsided...

...I'll be featuring a giveaway of several of my unfinished projects.

This grey bag will be among them...

...so if you'd like to finish it off for your own use...

...stay tuned!! :)

A Plethora of Peculiar Projects- Part 4 of ? (Cameo Slippers)

Cutting out initials...

...from a thick section of finished felt...

...plus two ovals from a piece of black pre-felt.

Needle-felting commercial pre-felt over each initial...

...for a cameo-like appearance.

Positioning the ovals on my slipper resists...

...then flipping them over before adding any fiber...

...(to work inside-out).

Covering the resist with wool roving.

With lots of finished felt scraps lying about...

...I'm always looking for a 're-purposing' project!

For these slippers...

...I decided to reclaim bits of thick, finished felt...

...by using them as bas relief in the embellishment!

Next time: a disaster occurs...

...and lessons are learned for the future! ,)

Mixed Raw Fleece Winter Slippers- Part 2 of 2

The finished slippers...

...shown, first, with the wrong side out...

...then here, as they are meant to be worn.

A close-up of their nubby texture.

Notice the boingy little fleece appendages on the heels?

In my daydreams, they transform these lowly, earthbound slippers...

...into winged sandals, like those belonging to the Greek god, Hermes! Giggle.

With a dense layer of raw fleece and cushiony layers of roving...

...these slippers will keep my partner's toes toasty warm.

Working with raw fleece is always fun for me...

...and getting to use up a portion of my mixed 'bag 'o locks' was a good feeling, as well!

Because of the rust, black and cream roving that I used to wrap around the edges of the resist...

...the toes of the finished slippers have a rather calico cat look to them...

...while the rest of the slippers remind me of a pinto horse or a Dalmatian.

At first, my partner flirted with the idea of wearing them 'inside-out'...

...but the charm of the raw locks exterior won him over in the end.

After all, who could resist having wings at their heels? :)
