Rothenburg ob der Tauber- 2015 Part 2 of 2

The Spring Awakening celebration...

...was being held the weekend that we visited...

                                               ...and each of the fountains...

                                        ...was festooned with brightly decorated...

                                                       ...'real' egg shells!

                                           During our wanderings about town...

...we saw many festive shop windows.

There were incense smokers of every imaginable design...

                                             ...and Scherenschnitte ornaments.

                                       There were beautiful, handmade knives...

                                                     ...decorated beer steins...

                                              ...embroidered sachets and linens...

                                              ...and various wooden items....

...which could be personalized with a wood burning tool.

There were bakeries offering traditional rye bread...

                                               ...intricately braided pretzels...

                                               ...and Schneeballe (snowballs)...

...made from fried dough strips dunked in cinnamon, powdered sugar or cocoa.

Of course, there were also many kinds of wurst!

I especially liked these cunningly packaged ones...

                                           ...resembling fancy Cuban cigars!

We ate dinner in a Medieval tavern named "To hell"...

...and the food was devilishly good! ;)

When I found myself coveting their gorgeous stoneware dishes...

I realized that I was guilty that night of both gluttony and greed! ;)

Being springtime, the spargel (white asparagus) was in season...

...and we all chose to try it in one form or another! (Delicious!!)

Next time: a bit of 'wedding felting'!!

Rothenburg ob der Tauber- 2015 Part 1 of 2

As we entered this Medieval walled city...

...it felt like we were experiencing a time warp!

                                                Vibrant color was everywhere...

                                                    ...despite overcast skies...

...and the whole city was bathed in a golden glow...

...at the setting of the sun.

                                                 We climbed the tower walls...

...for a lovely glimpse of the surrounding countryside...

                                               ...and the beauty of spring.

                                                                   Typically...

...it was the small, decorative details...

                                                ...which captivated me the most!

"Hey you, a little help up here?!!"

                                                    Next time: we go shopping!

Germany 2012- Part 2 Hamburg

Touring HafenCity, we saw lots of new construction.

Here I am, being gobbled up by two large tiled fish!

Even in winter, there are boats to be seen...

...and beautiful canal views in the gentrified warehouse district (docklands) of the city.

I couldn't resist a photo op with a very 'Dalek-like' church bell.

(See here if you have no idea what I'm talking about!) :)

The famous Christmas Markets were lively, crowded scenes of fun and celebration!

I loved the stall which sold only plush toy sheep.

Hamburg sure pulls out all the stops at Christmas-time!

Since we were flying home from Hamburg...

...we spent the last day and a half of our trip there.

I was slightly overwhelmed by the crowds and all of the shopping...

...and the Christmas markets that were both festive and ubiquitous.

I think I liked the quieter parts of the city better...

...the nearly empty streets of HafenCity...

...(where we visited a curious Spice Museum)...

...and the area around St. Michael's Church.

Because so many of you have (lovingly) inquired...

...I'm sad to report that my boyfriend's mother passed away the day after we arrived home.

His sister was with her at the time, however...

...and reports a peaceful and pain-free exit from this world.

I am so grateful that we were able to spend time with her in this way...

...and I know that my partner will cherish every final moment that he got to spend with his 'Mami'.
