Rain Vessel- Part 3

The finished vessel...

                                              ...stiffened by the felted-in paper...

                                                            ...is quite rigid.

                                                              During fulling...

...I trimmed the top edge into 'water droplets'...

...and made a few pointy protrusions...

                                              ...with a narrow wooden chopstick.

                                               The text lightened during felting...

...(to the point of near illegibility)...

                                                ...but the bas relief additions...

                                                       ...retained their perky...

                                                ...and protuberant appearance!

                                                     The finished rain vessel...

...in all of its textural glory! ;)

Rain Vessel- Part 2

Mid-way through felting...

                                                       ...the merino roving...

                                                          ...and the paper...

                                                             ...start to meld.

                                                     As the felting continues...

...the words become less and less legible...

...but I like to imagine that the soul of the poetry...

...remains in the body of the vessel.

                                                 Next time: the finished project.

Rain Vessel- Part 1

Wrapping the resist in layers of merino wool...

                                          ...and adding paper design elements.

                                       Cutting raindrops from handmade pre-felt...

...and placing them under the paper ones...

                                                 ...for a bas relief appearance.

Applying paper that contains the text of a favorite poem...

...and wrapping it to the second side.

                                                         Finishing the layout...

                                             ...and beginning the felting process.

Next time: the vessel begins to take shape.

Felted Vessel Experiments- Part 2 of 2

Adding yarn snippets...

...to the surface of the resist...

...and covering them with layers of wool roving.

                                                     Mid-way through felting...

...two felted cords are wrapped to form a handle...

                                                   ...and tied with wool yarn.

                                                      The finished project...

...has more surface decoration than my earlier vessel...

...and the stitches that hold the cords in place...

                                                 ...are rather wild and wonky.

                                                       The finished vessel...

...and all three of the projects that I completed...

...while visiting with my friend in Portland.

Thanks for a great visit, Elizabeth!

Felted Vessel Experiments- Part 1 of 2

Cutting a circle from foam underlayment...

...and covering it with layers of wool roving.

                                                       At the pre-felt stage...

...two slits are cut into the top layer...

                                                ...and the resist is removed.

                                                         A handle is created...

...by wrapping the middle strip of pre-felt around several felt cords...

...and stitching it closed with wool yarn.

After the project is fully felted...

...the ends of the cords are pinned into place for drying.

                                                         The finished vessel...

                                                        ...is the perfect size...

...for hair elastics and other small dresser items.

Next time: a slightly more decorative vessel!

Fiona Duthie's 'Fibre, Paper and Ink' Vessel Class- Part 3!

My classmates' beautiful...

                                                       ...and very different...

                                                               ...vessels...

                                                           ...and my own...

                                            ...with markings and color gradations...

                                              ...tempered by the felting process.

                                                   Next time: food and wine!
