This was a fun scarf to make...

...because of its various 'elements'...

...and although it was comprised of many steps...

...it was not a difficult project to make.

Using a layer of plastic between the ruffle and the scarf during felting...

...made it easy to fully felt each component...

...without felting them together.

Laying out two thin layers of superfine merino roving...

 

...and adding cut out bits from my last scarf as embellishment.

...I fashioned a new scarf in circus-like primary colors featuring sewn-on pre-felt ruffles.

Variations On A Red And Yellow Theme- Part 2 of 2

Scarf number two of the pair...

 

...with irregular holes snipped through its pre-felt surface.

 

As before, the scarf length...

...necessitated a bit of rolling and unrolling during felting..

...even on my long studio table! 

 The project, wetted-out...

 

...and mid-way through felting.

...one, demurely ruffled...

 

...and the other, naughtily pierced! Grin.

 

Because I prepared quite thin pre-felts for this project...

...the resulting scarves are very soft and supple...

...(nothing like this stiff-as-a-board iteration from my early days as a feltmaker!) :)

I hope that the wearers don't find them too long for true utility...

...and merely wrap them multiple times around the neck for warmth!

As I write this blog post, I find myself giggling a bit...

...since I just now realized that I gave the wild, pierced scarf to the more demure friend...

...and the more modest, ruffled one to the considerably more exuberant friend!

Variations On A Red And Yellow Theme- Part 1 of 2

Making two large pre-felt rectangles.



Stitching one yellow strip to one red strip with nylon thread... 

 

...and adding an 'opposite' color ruffle to each.

 

This scarf is very long...

 

...so I had to roll it up a bit during felting.

 

I used thin, painter's plastic as a resist...

...between the ruffle and the scarf surface.

 

Partway through felting.

 

Continuing my pre-felt experimentation...

...I prepared two long pre-felt rectangles...

...and trimmed them into narrow sections for felting.

After attaching one yellow to one red section...

...I hand-stitched the wispy trimmed off lengths to the surface of the scarf as ruffles...

 ...red on yellow and yellow on red.

Next time: the finished scarf...

...and a 'fraternal twin' with an entirely different 'look'! :)
