Missing Mojo?!?!

As some of you may know...

...this summer has been quite a difficult one for our family.

My partner spent a month in Germany...

...making hard decisions concerning how best to care for his elderly, ailing mother.

My firstborn daughter (the puppy's Mama)...

...was just diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

Her endocrinologist thinks that it may have been coming on for 2 or 3 years already(!)...

...following some kind of infection which slowly wiped out the insulin-producing cells in her pancreas.

And if these things didn't make me quite sad enough...

...it's now the week that my youngest daughters (twins) head off to their respective colleges for their Freshman year...

...cementing my 'empty nest syndrome'.

So...you'll understand why my mind hasn't really been on my felting of late...

...and you won't be too hard on me (please?!) about these latest egg cozies.

Believe it or not...

...the pointy one was supposed to be a spaceship!

The round one might have been ok...

...except that I used variegated grey and white roving for the background...

...and it just came out looking dirty.

The only nice photo I have for you today...

...is the bit of embroidery (on twill tape) that I did inside a book cover I made
a few weeks ago.

I like the way the white shows off my friend's name...

...and I think I'll use this technique again.

Egg Cozies

My family is very fond of 3-minute eggs for breakfast...

...and we have them quite often.

We have all of the usual accoutrements needed for making eggs like this...

...an implement to pierce a small hole in one end, an 'egg-perfect' egg timer, egg spoons and lots of different styles of egg cups.

I've been wanting to make some 'egg cozies' for some time now...

...large enough to fit over both the egg and the egg cup, keeping everything nice and toasty.

I made these using foam underlayment as a resist...

...and I laid out the needle-felted designs face down , before adding layers of fiber.

(You know how I love making things inside-out!)

After felting each cozy until I could 'pinch it' without pulling away loose fibers...

...I cut the bottoms, removed the resists, turned them right-side-out and continued felting them until they were done.

For the cat cozy, I made an awake side and a napping side...

...and for the 'egg' cozy, a sleepy (or wincing?) cracked side and a happy, flower-shaped-yolk side!

The yolk flower was a fully felted piece, given to me (along with the other delightful felting supplies that you see here)...

...by my sweet friend, Sally.

Since it was already felt, it didn't 'want' to stick to the wool roving as well as a pre-felt piece would...

...so I tacked down the reluctant places with a bit of hand embroidery.

I've shown the 'fit' using some pysanky eggs that we wax-resist dyed last Easter...

...and they work great!!
