Merry Christmas- 2015!

Christmas at our house...

...came a week early (due to the schedules of my far-flung children).

We spent a wonderful day together...

                                                 ...filled with laughter and food...

...and I'm finally at liberty to share the most exciting news of all:

My first grandchild will arrive in the Spring!

                                                            (Woot woot!!!!!) :)

After noticing that our string of Christmas cards...

...was just the right height for such shenanigans...

...my tall son-in-law posed charmingly with my 'Caps For Sale' moustache!

He was also so delighted with Lydia's new felt purse...

...that he **pulled a Dawn Edwards!!

(**definition: turning any purse into a hat)

Using leather punches, shoe polish and woodburning tools...

...my daughters completed their new leather purse kits...

                                                    ...in very individual ways...

...and each child received a tin of 'Thinking Putty'...

(one 'glow in the dark', one clear, one magnetic, etc.)...

...because everyone deserves a great toy for Christmas!! :)

Wishing you all a festive and love-filled day today!

                                                       Merry Christmas!!!

"Bedecked Christmas Tree" Hat- Part 4 of 4 (Merry Christmas!!)

The finished hat...

...(modeled by my daughter Hannah)...

                                               ...sports battery-powered lights...

                                                      ...rows of jingle bells...

...faceted Christmas balls on golden cords...

...and even an angel pin! :)

And just in case the hat doesn't attract enough attention on its own...

...some of the lights are set to blink on and off, at intervals! ;)

                                                            As you can see...

...the integrated pocket in the 'tree skirt'...

                                             ...holds the battery pack perfectly.

While it's not actually being worn...

...it makes a rather fine centerpiece...

                                                          ...don't you think? :)

Here, the mysterious Mr. Green stands in for my son-in-law...

...(so I can check for size).

                                                 Merry Christmas, everyone!!!

"Bedecked Christmas Tree" Hat- Part 3 of 4

Handmade green pre-felt is trimmed into 'spiky' sections...

...and added to the surface of the project.

It's prevented from 'felting into' the body of the hat...

...by pieces of thin plastic from a grocery bag.

                                                    Mid-way through felting...

...the piece is cut open and the resist is removed.

(The hat is flipped inside-out from time to time during felting...

                                                     ...to work on the seams.)

Whew...the hat finally reaches its desired size!!

                                                 The fully felted hat...drying.

At first, it reminded me a little of a dragon...

                                             ...but as ornaments were added...

...its true nature began to reveal itself! :)

                                                 Next time: the finished hat!!

"Bedecked Christmas Tree" Hat- Part 2 of 4

Adding additional layers of fiber to the resist surface...

...and narrowing the brown (trunk) area a bit on each side.

Layers of wool are added over a small pocket resist...

                                        ...and yarn-embellished pre-felt squares...

                                                  ...decorate the 'tree skirt'.

Three narrow felt cords are fashioned on each side...

...(prevented from 'felting in' by a thin strip of bubble wrap down the middle).

A star shaped resist is cut from bubble wrap...

...and the resulting tree-top star is embellished with golden tussah silk...

                                                   ...and pre-felt accents.

                                              After partially felting the star...

                                               ...it's stuffed with loose roving...

...and attached to the top of the tree...

                                               ...using large basting stitches.

Next time: 'tree branches' are added...

                                                   ...and the felting continues!
